The Bridge Shop was founded in 1974 by Sydney bridge identity George Stephens. He opened up a little store in Northbridge, Sydney and began by importing books from the UK and the United States to meet the demands of the local bridge community.
The business was immediately successful and quickly grew to supply other products such as playing cards and other supplies for club and home bridge.
Stephens retired from the business in 1988, selling The Bridge Shop to Richard Brightling, a New Zealand expatriate who had just opened Trumps, which was soon to become the biggest club in Australia. Brightling ran The Bridge Shop (as well as Australian Bridge Magazine) from an upstairs office but it quickly outgrew these small premises. The shop was moved to Willoughby in 1992. In 1998 Brightling sold his bridge club to local teacher Derrick Browne and The Bridge Shop to Nick Fahrer, its current owner.
In July 2022, The Bridge Shop transitioned to become an online, phone and mail order only business. The Bridge Shop has been an innovator and a pioneer in new technologies in the bridge products market:
▪ In 1996, it became the first bridge business in the world to open an online internet store
▪ In 2011, it was the first bridge book re-seller to supply digital bridge books
▪ In 2012, it became the first on-line bridge store to supply downloadable bridge software
Today, The Bridge Shop is a household name across Australia within the bridge community and has a world-wide and well deserved reputation for first class products and customer service.
