Clayton Carmichael has a rock solid alibi - but the mystery of Elsie's death deepens as more pieces of this intruiging puzzles are unearthed. Pemberton is small village where everyone is familiar with everyone else in town but curiously often the personalities the players reveal at the bridge table are quite different to how they behave in everyday life. So has Clayton, a friendly type at the bridge club, somehow engineered his wife's brutal death?

The deadly endplay of the title relates to a deal that comes up in a club game, and also refers to how the murder, if it was indeed a murder, was committed.
