When your RHO passes, you will usually make a minimum bid in an unbid suit. That could be based on a total Yarborough. Therefore, when you do have some values, you should try hard to let partner know that you are not broke.

Of course, sometimes your RHO won't pass. If you don't have something to talk about, you are now welcome to pass. However, that does NOT mean that because you are off the hook, you should be eager to pass. A free bid does NOT promise a rose garden.

In this lesson, Marty will discuss:

If RHO passes:

  • - When you're forced to lie, what is the lesser of evils?
  • - How much strength is needed for a jump?
  • - What does a cue-bid show?
  • - When to say "NO" to second-hand low
  • - Is this the right time to bid up-the-line?
  • - Does a jump response promise a 5-card suit?

If RHO doesn't pass:

  • - What is the correct mindset?
  • - Exactly what do you need to make a free bid?
  • - How relevant is the vulnerability?
  • - How can you show values when you lack a descriptive bid?
  • - Can you ever make a Michaels-type cue-bid?
  • - When your RHO raises, what is your #1 priority?

After a redouble:

  • - Which notrump bids are Unusual?
  • - How can you survive when you are in trouble?
  • - How can you attack when you are not in trouble?

You hold: ♠72  83  J7543  ♣KQ93

Both sides are vulnerable. What would you do?

Let's try some Q&A.

1. Do the opponents have a spade fit?

Yes. Both you and your partner are short in spades.

2. Does your side have a fit?

Yes. Partner has 3+ cards in each minor, so you have 8+ diamonds, and might also have a club fit.

3. Are you willing to get to the 3 level?

Yes. Partner has an opening bid with short spades and the other 3 suits, so selling out to 2S is out of the question. Do keep in mind that the minimum needed to double 1S is greater than the minimum needed to double a lower-ranking suit.

4. Which minor do you belong in?

You can't be sure. Partner might even have 3 diamonds and 5 clubs. However, if you show both suits, partner will know which to choose.

5. How can you show both minors here?

Bid 2NT. After the redouble, you can't have a good hand, so this MUST promise the minors. I call this the "Unusual Unusual Notrump".
